Sedition smelled like gun smoke in 1865
Brother killing brother, families choosing sides
We danced close to the devil as our better angels fell
And drove this brand-new country right up to the gates of hell
Lincoln’s tears have been dry for years
Ever since the civil war
Trading skin and bone for marble and stone
And every school kid knows what for
A house can stand united
Until it’s torn down from within
Lincoln’s tears have been dry for years
But we’re making them fall again
They didn’t ride in on horseback, in the dead of night
They showed up in pickup trucks in the broad daylight
Wrapped in a brand-new rebel flag they kicked in our door
We should have seen it coming, ‘cause we’ve been here before
Lincoln’s tears have been dry for years
Ever since the civil war
Trading skin and bone for marble and stone
And every school kid knows what for
A house can stand united
Until it’s torn down from within
Lincoln’s tears have been dry for years
But we’re making them fall again
Its a weeping in the soul
first cried long ago
And there’s no excuse for saying
That we didn’t know
Lincoln’s tears have been dry for years
Ever since the civil war
Trading skin and bone for marble and stone
And every school kid knows what for
A house can stand united
Until it’s torn down from within
Lincoln’s tears have been dry for years
But we’re making them fall again
Lincoln’s tears have been dry for years
But we’re making them fall again
